Reconcile an account at month-end

Updated October 4, 2026 2 min read

On this page

Reconciliation is part of month-end close. It compares the reviewed book balance with the bank balance for the same period and explains real differences.

Before you begin

Finish transaction review and have the period-end statement ready. You need close permission and access to the account. Use dated evidence rather than assuming today’s balance is the month-end balance.

Reconcile the account

  1. Open the month’s close workspace and find the account’s reconciliation panel.
  2. Check the book balance and the dated bank balance.
  3. For a manual account, enter the statement ending balance as requested.
  4. Investigate differences. Correct missing or duplicate activity using the appropriate transaction workflow.
  5. Record genuine timing differences, such as an outstanding check or deposit in transit, with their amount and explanation.
  6. Confirm reconciliation when the amounts tie out.

If you cannot tie out

The workflow can record an explicit exception with a required explanation. This documents an unresolved issue; it does not mean the bank and books match. Use it deliberately and keep the investigation traceable.

Do not invent a balancing item

An unexplained adjustment can hide the cause of a difference. Check dates, starting balances, review status, and statement evidence first. Missing evidence is not a zero bank balance.

Closed months

The reconciliation record freezes when the month closes. Changes require reopening the month and completing the checks again.
